Ai4Counseling

AI4Counseling is an Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership in Higher Education project that aims to strengthen the training of future school counselors by integrating artificial intelligence into social and educational psychology. The project focuses on the ethical, responsible, and human-centered use of AI to support student well-being, academic development, and career guidance. Through the development of a university-level elective course, the creation of the AI4Counsel Assistant, and the provision of open-access educational resources, AI4Counseling enhances digital competencies among educators and counseling professionals while promoting data protection, transparency, and professional judgment. The project brings together higher education institutions, educational centers, non-governmental organizations, and technology partners across Europe to support innovation in counseling education and contribute to the digital transformation of higher education.

About the Project

AI4Counseling addresses the growing need to modernize school counseling education in response to increasing student mental health challenges, academic pressure, and rapid digital transformation in education. Across Europe, school counselors are required to support students’ emotional well-being, learning pathways, and career development, often with limited resources and high workloads. At the same time, artificial intelligence is increasingly present in educational environments, yet structured training on its ethical and professional use in counseling remains limited.

The project responds to this gap by integrating artificial intelligence into the education of future school counselors in a way that enhances, rather than replaces, human-centered counseling practices. AI4Counseling combines academic research, practical training, and technological development to ensure that AI tools are used responsibly, transparently, and in full compliance with ethical and legal standards. By embedding AI literacy within higher education curricula, the project supports the development of digitally competent counseling professionals capable of addressing contemporary educational challenges.

Objectives

The main objective of AI4Counseling is to enhance the quality and relevance of school counselor education by integrating artificial intelligence into social and educational psychology training at higher education level.

The specific objectives of the project are to:

Identify and analyze existing artificial intelligence tools relevant to school counseling, with particular attention to ethical use, data protection, and professional responsibility.

Develop the AI4Counsel Assistant, an AI-powered tool designed to support school counselors in student well-being, academic guidance, and career orientation, while ensuring a human-in-the-loop approach.

Design and implement a university-level elective course that combines AI theory, ethical considerations, and hands-on counseling practice.

Strengthen digital and AI-related competencies among future school counselors and university educators.

Promote responsible, transparent, and GDPR-compliant use of artificial intelligence in educational and counseling contexts.

Disseminate open-access educational resources and project results to support adoption and sustainability across European higher education institutions.
